R.F. Wood retired on 16 March 2018 (during season 34) aged 34.
Rupert Fredrick Wood or "Boring" as he was known to all of his teammates has had an absolutely brilliant career that deserves true recognition. He is a great of the Mitcham Magic and 'a template for all future all-rounders to aim for' as his first team The Ducklings described him. This is his story.
Rupert was a founding member of The Ducklings way back in season in season 7. Wood had a modest time at the Ducklings playing in 39 first-class matches scoring 1284 runs at an average of 25.68 and took 56 wickets at an average of 29.23. During his stay at The Ducklings he never quite reached his potential in the One day matches only taking 11 wickets in 14 matches as an average of 75.45.
During Season 30 is when would was put up for transfer by The Ducklings. The Mitcham Magic had just been founded and was looking for some experience to help get them on track. This is when they came across Wood. Instantly they knew he was their man and were able to purchase him for the bargain price of $9,001. He was Mitcham Magics 3rd recruitment along with Thresher and Zwemke and those three have been inseparable since.
It didn't take long for Wood to make an impression at his new club. He scored 60* in his first first-class innings and took his a 5 wickets in his next match. Mitcham Magic and 'boring' seemed destined to be together. Wood went on to win the CC Asia Starter Bowling Award and also took the most wickets. He was truly on fire averaging 17.92 that season with the ball and a very solid 52.18 with the bat.
Wood went from season to season being very consistent with each season taking 186 wickets during his time at the Magic which currently is 2nd on the table of most wickets. He averaged 25.25 with the ball and took 12 5 wicket halls and 3 10 wicket halls. He was also very handy with the batting scoring 1352 runs including 3 centuries for the Magic including a magical 151*.
His One Day career wasn't quite so impressive but never the less very solid. He took 99 wickets at an average of 30.93 for the Magic. He scored 784 runs at an average of 23.76.
To finish off I will recall the day of Wood's life when he took 7 for 10 against Khanz XI including one over when he claimed a quadruple wicket maiden.
Overall Wood was a very consistent and reliable player who is undoubtedly a Mitcham Magic Legend. His ultimate professionalism will be sorely missed but as we all know all good things must come to an end. Thanks, Woody!
Medium quick bowling all-rounder Wood was key to some of the early successes of the Ducklings. With the bat, he provided the link between the batsmen and the bowlers, grinding out over 1200 runs (including 4x 50 and 1x 100) at a respectable average of 25. With the ball he played the role of 4th seamer where he proved especially effective at breaking partnerships with his canny use of swing. He became the first seam bowler to take a 5wi when he took 6-30 in a losing effort back in tier 5, although his bowling often got found out if batsmen could withstand the early pressure. He is, to date, the only seam bowler to achieve the 50 wicket/1000 run double. He never took to OD cricket where his steady swing proved meat and drink for the aggressive OD stars, nevertheless he has become something of a template for all future bowling all-rounders to aim for.
