A left-armer who swings the ball both ways, a useful lower-order batsman and a run-saving fielder, Saini will finish with numbers that do him a disservice. No pace bowler in CC history, probably, has played as many games as Saini has as the sole seamer on a pitch offering nothing to the pace bowlers. His ability to support the spin bowlers, as well as extracting what life the pitch contained to make a contribution himself, made him an indispensable part of the Eagles' XI from seasons 34 to 39, during which he played every game in both formats. He more often got reward for effort in one-day cricket: a noted strike bowler, he topped the club's wicket-taking four times and won two club best and fairest awards.
Originally recruited from SONS OF PITCHES, Saini was plagued by inconsistency before a remodelled bowling action saw him take 40 wickets in 29 games in season 29. He got his first taste of senior cricket the following season, his solitary game making him a CC Oceania championship player. Saini was then granted more regular opportunities with sixteen games in seasons 31 to 33. Glimpses of promise included six-fors against Dockeroo2 and Bowral Suns XI and a maiden half-century against Anti Inertia, with which he achieved the unusual feat of top-scoring in the innings from number 11.
The prime of Saini's career corresponded to a dearth of other quality pace bowlers in the Eagles' lineup, and the dominance of spinners such as P.K. Thomson and K.A. Naz. As such, he took to the task of supporting the spinners on lifeless tracks, and providing footmarks from his left arm over-the-wicket action for them to bowl into. He had his moments, including a career-best season 38 reaped 57 wickets at an average of 31, and further six-wicket hauls against Noll's XI and the North Eastern Magic, both resulting in victories. Saini's modest batting also showed occasional flashes of brilliance. His three centuries include a career-best of 173 in a game-changing partnership with W.W. Tayfield against the Dockeroos, and an unbeaten 149 in a record last-wicket partnership with W. Howell against Hounds of Shadow, which culminated in a thrilling win.
