WESTVILLE CC CLUB LEGEND

Alexander Graeme Smith

Cousin of S.P.D. Smith

Born in Sydney, New South Wales but moved to South Africa with his family at a young age, growing up on their sheep farm in the Eastern Cape, and training as a sandpaper artisan.

With a highest first class score of 467, at the time, a world record for a batsmen batting at number 5, and another treble century to his name he is the only Westville CC player to twice score a triple hundred. With the bat he is known for going big when he gets himself in, which is impressive given his responsibilities as wicketkeeper. Consider him a combination of Adam Gilchrist and Brian Lara.

in Season 34 he became the third Westville CC player to score 5,000 first class runs, and then the 3rd to 6,000 runs later that season.

In Season 37 became the 3rd Westville CC plater to score 8,000 runs and shortly after became the leading run scorer for the team, passing EM Flowers and AG Selsick. In Season 38 became the first Westville CC player to 9,000 runs and in Season 39 the first to 10,000 runs.

Initially a Westville CC youth player getting game time as backup keeper to AG Selsick, He made his debut as a fresh-faced 19 year old in Season 25 but having to wait a few years for his next cap. He eventually he forced his way into the side on a permanent basis through sheer volume of runs and his epic 467 in Season 28, coupled with his superior glovework. Facing competition from others in the squad for the keeper position after THAT innings his selection became a no-brainer and he was an ever-present in the squad from Season 31 as Westville rose up through the leagues. Once his career is over it will take many seasons before a similarly strong keeper-batsman emerges and his catches and stumping records will stand for a long time.
