The Eagles jumped on Bakker when they scored pick 3 in the mid-season 30 draft, and fans soon saw why as he burst onto the scene with an attractive century against nishantp123. Bakker's poise and technique made him one of the most pleasing to watch batsmen in the world, but despite averaging about 40 in six seasons spent predominantly in the 2nd XI, he passed fifty only five more times, including two further hundreds. This set the scene for much of his career thus far: a precocious player who seemingly always dominates the bowling, but too often throws his wicket away along with the chance of posting a matchwinning score.

Bakker captained the Eagles' 2nd XI for three seasons before being called up to the Eagles' senior first-class lineup at the age of 22. He made an impact on debut with a pair of fluent half-centuries, playing an important role in a come-from-behind victory over old foe Cricket Inc, and scored one more fifty in two further matches that season. Bakker then steadily entrenched himself in the side with eight matches the next season and twelve in the following, breaking through with his first century against Midhirst CC - a critical rearguard innings that turned a hefty deficit into a narrow lead.

Bakker played every game in season 38 and was a consistent performer in the lower-middle order, scoring 842 runs at 44 with nine half-centuries. He maintained his place in the side for the next two seasons but was somewhat disappointing and stagnant for a player entering his prime, averaging in the thirties. What he truly lacked was big scores: by the end of season 40, in 65 first-class matches, he had made 28 fifties but only three hundreds. That conversion rate finally began to rectify itself in a career-best season 41, when Bakker more than doubled his career hundreds tally en route to breaking the 1,000-run mark for the first time. He will now look to build on this effort next season.
